GPS 5.0 - LEVEL 1
Gully or Street‑Level Problem Solving
Streets, Parks, Markets & Neighbourhoods
Understanding What Work Is
Level 1 is where the GPS journey begins—not with big ambitions, but with attention to the immediate world.
Learners are introduced to the idea that work is not something that happens only in offices or factories. Work happens wherever people are trying to improve situations, solve problems, or serve others. Streets, parks, neighbourhoods, and local markets become living classrooms.
5.OIL Journey

Pre-requisite
All applicants are required to participate in a mandatory Admission Workshop as part of the selection process. This workshop is designed to assess an applicant’s readiness, mindset, and foundational problem-solving abilities aligned with the principles of Society 5.0.
Selection Criteria
Admission is not based on prior academic background alone. Selection is determined by an evaluation of the applicant’s performance during the Admission Workshop, including:
-
Problem-Solving approach
-
Analytical and Critical Thinking skills
-
Participation and Collaboration
-
Alignment with Society 5.0 values and mindset
Successful completion of this workshop is a pre-requisite for admission consideration
What Learners Do
Learners engage in guided field observations, simple interviews, team discussions, and reflective documentation. They practice defining problems clearly and designing small, realistic interventions that are safe and appropriate for their age.
The emphasis is not on “fixing everything,” but on learning:
-
How to Observe Responsibly
-
How to Work in Teams
-
How to Document and Communicate Clearly
-
How to take Ownership of Small Tasks
Ecosystems Explored
Students explore environments they already know, but with a new lens. They learn how to slow down, observe carefully, and notice things they may have ignored before.
Typical ecosystems include:
-
Residential streets and neighbourhoods
-
Parks and community spaces
-
Playgrounds and local markets
This familiarity helps learners focus on how to think and work, rather than feeling overwhelmed by scale.
